Our Story

In 2016, HAM Plan started when two best friends, Austin Malleolo and Spencer Hendel, decided to start sharing what they love about training and training together. After years competing at the highest levels of fitness and appearing at the CrossFit Games multiple times, they took a simple step: they began teaching others what they learned. Spencer and Austin looked at their programming, the similarity of their goals, and the difference in their methods. From there they made their programming knowledge accessible to all levels of athletes regardless of their backgrounds or goals.

What Spencer and Austin wanted to share then is what we still try to share now: insight, education, and a mindset. Though thoughtfully crafted workouts rooted in a decade of training and competing is the core of what we do, it’s also just the beginning.

Since 2016, we’ve grown. Not only are we athletes who competed at the highest level of CrossFit, but we are also affiliate owners, coaches, and affiliate members. Since day one we’ve wanted to give anyone, athlete or coach, new or experienced, the opportunity to Work Hard and Have Fun. We create more than workouts. We create resources based on experience and based on our passions. We create programming, class plans, workout tips, demo videos, coaching tutorials, and insights so you can simply focus on the things that matter most: your training and your athletes.

Our Story

What does “HAM” mean?

It started out as a double meaning: the first being the initials of the founders Hendel & Malleolo, and the second being a PG-13 acronym for how hard we expect you to work (and no, it is not “hard as a maniac”). Since then, we have grown in owners and meaning to Hendel, Hobart, Herbanek, and Malleolo (the initials that all fit the name were not planned, but we will take it!). Our core value of working hard is still there, but making sure to have fun while you do is essential to our mission. From our athletes to our coaches, we expect you to live these values, and you will be successful!

What Makes Us unique

Physical fitness impacts more than just our bodies. It can change how we perceive ourselves, how we perceive others, and even how we perceive the obstacles in front of us. It’s something that we have experienced, and we are here because the least we can do is provide an opportunity for you to share in that experience. 

Your fitness journey and your goals could be very different from those around you. For some of you, this might be your first step towards realizing how fitness can improve the quality of your life and the lives of those around you. Whether you have only worked out once in the last three years, or three times in the last three hours, we want to help you to continue moving forward and reaching your goals.

We are athletes, competitors, gym owners, head coaches, parents, full-time employees, and garage gym warriors just like you. Even as our goals and priorities have changed, we kept realizing two things. First, if you work hard, stay consistent, remain accountable, learned from yesterday, and put in an honest effort, then the results will come. Second, if you have fun, appreciate your own effort, laugh at your mistakes, and share your adventure with others, then the results feel more fulfilling. 

What makes HAM Plan unique is that it is our fitness education and experience combined, offering you thoughtful, effective, and enjoyable programming, regardless of your resources and goals. We will take on the leg work, not just telling you what to do, but also how to do it and why. That way you only have to show up, work hard, and have fun.
